Gym marketing · a working guide
Gym marketing strategies that bring in members
The gym marketing strategies that work are local and measurable: fix your Google profile, target ads to the catchment, make the join flow honest and fast, run open days and trials with clear terms, reward referrals, plan January early, and keep new joiners past their first 90 days.
Below are ten strategies. Each has steps and one metric to watch.

01/ Ten gym marketing strategies
Ten strategies, each with steps and a metric.
Work through them in order. The early ones make every later one cheaper.
Own your Business Profile
- One profile per site, real-world name
- Hours, photos and classes kept current
- Answer every review within a week
- Metric: calls and direction requests per site
A page per gym
- Facilities, timetable, parking, transport
- Price shown on the page
- One join button
- Metric: location page to join-start rate
Catch people already looking
- Brand and “gym near me” terms by site
- Radius set from where members live
- Ad copy states the total price
- Metric: cost per join
Build demand before peaks
- Real members and staff, not stock
- One offer per ad, terms beside it
- Retarget join-flow drop-outs
- Metric: cost per join-start
Make joining quick and honest
- Total price on the first screen
- Under five minutes on a phone
- Contract terms before payment
- Metric: start-to-join rate
Let people try the floor
- Book a slot, not just turn up
- Staff tours and a taster class
- Clear offer that ends on a date
- Metric: visitors who join within 14 days
Trials with stated terms
- Say if a paid plan starts after
- State the cost beside the offer
- Remind before the trial ends
- Metric: trial-to-member rate
Members bring friends
- Guest passes members can share
- Reward both sides
- Track who referred whom
- Metric: share of joins from referrals
Local employers and clubs
- Employer rates and onsite days
- Sports clubs and physios
- One named contact per partner
- Metric: joins per partner
Keep the joiners
- First visit booked at join
- Induction offered in week one
- Contact when visits drop
- Metric: cancellations within 90 days
02/ Strategies 1 to 4: be found
Get found by people nearby.
People look for a gym they can reach. That makes local search the first strategy, not an extra.
Google asks for one profile per business location, named as it appears on the sign, with an accurate address and the fewest categories that describe it (Google Business Profile guidelines, platform policy). Adding keywords to the name risks suspension.
For paid search, Google Ads can target a radius of at least 1 km or areas such as postcodes (Google Ads Help, platform documentation). Set the radius from members’ home postcodes rather than guessing.
Search beyond the map is covered in gym SEO; channel and placement choice in gym advertising.

03/ Strategy 5: convert
Every strategy ends at the join flow.
Open days, ads and referrals all send people to the same place. If the join flow loses them, every channel looks worse than it is.
Show the total price first. The CMA says traders must give total prices, including unavoidable charges, up front, and that hiding fees until later in the purchase is illegal drip pricing (CMA, price transparency summary, regulator guidance).
How to set and present the price itself is on gym membership pricing.

04/ Gym promotion and open day ideas
Gym open day ideas that lead to joins.
An open day works when it is booked, hosted and followed up. A busy floor with no next step is an event, not a promotion.
Ask visitors to book a slot. Give each one a tour from a named member of staff and a taster class. End with one offer that closes on a set date.
If the promotion is a free or discounted trial that turns into a paid membership, the ASA expects the ad to say so: whether payment starts automatically, what it costs, and any other significant condition, placed right next to the offer (ASA enforcement notice; ASA advice on subscription traps, advertising regulator).
Offer structure is covered in gym membership offers.
05/ Strategies 8 and 9: other people’s reach
Members and partners reach people ads miss.
A friend who already trains there is the most credible reason to try a gym.
Give members guest passes they can share, reward both sides when a guest joins, and record who referred whom so the reward is paid without argument. Mechanics are in gym referral programme.
Following up guests by email or text needs care. The ICO says marketing messages to individuals need specific consent, except a limited soft opt-in for existing customers (ICO, electronic mail marketing, regulator guidance). A guest who never bought anything is not an existing customer.
Employers, sports clubs and physios can send members too; see gym partnerships and corporate gym membership.

06/ Seasonality
Plan January in October.
January is the year’s main joining moment, and the summer push comes second. Both reward planning.
Decide offers, budget caps and creative by October for January and by April for summer. Book the induction staff at the same time.
Then decide what happens to January joiners in February. That is where many peak campaigns are won or lost.

07/ Strategy 10: keep them
How to get more gym members: keep them.
Net membership grows when joiners outnumber leavers. Cutting early cancellations grows a gym as surely as adding joins.
Book the first visit at the moment of joining, offer an induction in week one, and contact anyone whose visits drop.
The full programme is gym member retention; the rates to track are on gym membership retention rate.

Rescue08/ Where to start
Pick three strategies, not ten.
A single site with a weak join flow should start with strategies 1, 2 and 5. A group with good local search but high early cancellations should start with 5, 7 and 10.
Run three well for a quarter, measure each with its metric, then add the next.
If you want a team to run them across your sites, that is our gym marketing agency service.
