Gym groups · a partnerships playbook
Gym partnerships that bring members in
Gym partnerships are agreements with an organisation that already reaches the people you want as members: an employer, a physiotherapy clinic, a local business, a multi-gym pass or an NHS social prescribing service. The good ones send referrals you can count; the rest are logos on a poster.
This guide covers the five partner types, what each one wants in return and how to measure a partnership before you renew it.

01/ Gym partnership ideas
Five partner types, five different deals.
Every partnership trades something you have, usually discounted access or space, for something they have, usually an audience.
The type decides who pays, who holds the member relationship and what you can measure.
Pick the type first; the partner name comes second.
→ measure
02/ Employer partnerships
Employers: the biggest audience, the slowest start.
An employer partnership gives staff a discounted or subsidised membership, usually through a code, a landing page or the employer’s benefits platform.
The deal is signed with HR or reward; the joins come from employees, so launch material matters more than the contract.
Give each employer its own code or page, so joins can be counted per employer at renewal.
The membership product itself, pricing tiers and employer-paid options, is covered in corporate gym membership.

03/ Physio and health partnerships
Health partners refer people who need a plan.
Physiotherapists, sports therapists and podiatrists see people at the moment they are told to exercise. A referral route from their clinic to your gym catches that moment.
The usual deal: you host the clinician, or give their patients a starter rate; they refer patients finishing treatment.
Check registration before you name anyone in marketing. “Physiotherapist” and “physical therapist” are titles protected by law, and only people on the HCPC register may use them (HCPC).
Keep claims about health outcomes out of partner copy unless you can source them; what the clinician does is their claim to make, not yours.

01Is each named clinician on the HCPC register?
02Is there a written referral route?
03Is partner copy free of unsourced health claims?
04Is patient data kept out of the referral?

04/ Local business partnerships
Local partners lend you their customers’ trust.
Cafés, running shops, bike shops, nutrition stores, schools and sports clubs near a site already talk to people who might train.
Reciprocal offers work best when each side gets something it values: a discount for your members in their shop, a trial pass for their customers in your gym.
Use one code per partner so redemptions show who sends joiners, not just who sends discount hunters.
Do not trade free sessions or discounts for reviews. Google removes reviews posted in return for an incentive, including discounts and free services (Google Maps content policy); gym SEO covers the full reviews policy.

05/ Aggregators and multi-gym passes
Aggregators fill capacity; they also own the customer.
Aggregators sell one pass that works across many venues. Hussle describes itself as one pass for multi-gym access with no contracts or joining fees, and invites gym owners to list for free (Hussle).
Wellhub sells to employers: companies pay annually based on team size and employees pay a monthly subscription for access to its network (Wellhub).
ClassPass pitches itself to studios as a way to fill unused class spots and appointment times without displacing direct members (ClassPass for partners). Its own figures are vendor data; read them as such.
The trade-off is the relationship. The pass holder belongs to the platform, so the question is whether a visit converts into a direct member or replaces one.
Set a cap on pass visits at peak times, and track how many pass users later join directly.

least06/ NHS and social prescribing
Social prescribing connects patients to local activity.
NHS England describes social prescribing as connecting people to activities, groups and services in their community to meet the practical, social and emotional needs that affect their health and wellbeing (NHS England).
Referrals go through a social prescribing link worker, based in primary care networks, who co-produces a personalised plan with the person (NHS England).
NHS England says it works particularly well for people with long-term conditions, low-level mental health needs, loneliness or complex social needs (NHS England).
For a gym, the route in is the link worker, not the GP. Offer a clear, affordable starter option, a named contact and a welcoming first session, and ask your local primary care network how its scheme refers.
Arrangements vary by area, so describe what you offer, not what the NHS will pay for.

07/ Gym brand partnerships
Brand partnerships: fund the offer, not the logo.
Brand partnerships with equipment, nutrition, apparel or wearable brands usually trade floor space, screens or member communications for money, product or co-funded campaigns.
They earn their place when they add something members use, such as a challenge, kit for a class or a product sample at induction.
Agree in writing who may contact your members, through which channel and on what consent; your member list is not a partner asset.
Ancillary income is a real line for listed operators: The Gym Group counts advertising through media screens within its revenue definition (The Gym Group plc; see UK fitness market for operators’ figures).
08/ Score a partner
Score a partnership before you sign it.
Most partnerships fail on reach or measurement, not on goodwill. Score each candidate the same way and compare.

09/ Partnerships as part of growth
Partnerships work best inside a plan.
Gym membership is a mainstream market: ukactive’s 2026 report counts 12.2 million members and 18% penetration (ukactive). Partners reach the people outside that 18%.
A partnership is one acquisition channel alongside gym advertising, gym membership offers and a gym referral programme. Partner joiners still need the welcome that gym member retention depends on.
As a gym marketing agency, we build partnership programmes for gym groups: partner selection, codes and landing pages, launch material and the measurement that decides renewals.
