01 / Professional bodies
Search for the qualification, not the body
People search for the designation, the exam or the CPD before they search for you. LinkedIn job-title targeting reaches the grade you want.

01/ definition
Pay-per-click (PPC) means you pay Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn or Meta each time someone clicks your ad. For a membership body the click is the cheap part. What counts is whether that person joins, pays, and is still a member at renewal.
So we build accounts backwards from the member: bids from lifetime value, joins imported from your membership system, and reports that run to first renewal.
Paid media is rarely the channel members credit first. It earns its place at one moment: when someone is searching, and your email and referrals cannot reach them. The evidence is in the tabs.
LinkedIn’s B2B Institute, in vendor research with the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, calls it the 95:5 rule: “95% of your potential buyers aren’t illustrative B2B in-market share”. This is B2B vendor research guidance about category purchase cycles, not a measured split for membership prospects. Use search for evidenced active demand and assess broader reach against your own audience and goals.
02/ the maths
Move the sliders. Dues, renewal and spend beyond dues become a lifetime value, then the most you can pay for a member, and for a click.
A rule of thumb puts acquisition cost at 50–100% of first-year dues: £90–£180 on your dues.
Most you can pay for one new member
£407
5.6 expected years · lifetime value £1,222 · 3:1
Most you can pay per click at a 3.0% join rate£12.22
Check these against your data →Lifetime value by renewal rate, on your dues
At 82% renewal a member is worth £1,222. Five points higher: £1,692. Our arithmetic on your inputs. The ember dot is your renewal rate.
Our arithmetic, indicative, on your inputs. Lifetime value = (annual dues + spend beyond dues) × expected years, the method in Tony Rossell’s worked example; expected years = 1 ÷ (1 − renewal rate). The 3:1 lifetime-value-to-acquisition-cost ratio is GlueUp’s published guidance; the 50–100%-of-first-year-dues rule of thumb is MembershipCorp’s. The 82% starting value is the median renewal rate in Marketing General’s 2026 benchmark, a US survey.
Watch the right-hand number: the most you can pay for a click and still hit your target. If the platforms charge more, the fix is a better join rate or a different channel, not a bigger budget. Paid members can renew differently from referred ones, so we measure first-year renewal by campaign rather than assume your average.
03/ channels
Search captures demand that exists. Social creates it. Pick by what your members do before they join.

04/ google ad grants
Membership charities can get up to US$10,000 a month of Google search ads in kind. Trade associations and professional bodies that are not registered charities cannot.
Google Ad Grants account management policy and Ad Grants FAQ · Google, read 28 September 2026. Miss the 5% two months running and the account is deactivated.
An unmanaged grant account drifts into deactivation, quietly. We set it to count membership registrations, keep it inside the rules, and run a paid account alongside for the searches the bid cap cannot win.
Microsoft’s equivalent is not an option: its Ads for Social Impact grant “is currently paused”, and its nonprofit rules exclude “Professional, commerce and trade associations”.
Google Ad Grants · quick check
01Is your organisation a registered charity with a Charity Commission, OSCR or CCNI number?
02Is it run exclusively for charitable purposes?
03Is it a government body, a hospital or healthcare organisation, or a school or university?
04Do you own the website the ads will point to, served over HTTPS?
05Can you record at least one conversion a month, such as a membership registration?
Answer the five questions to see where you stand.
Not sure of your number? Search the Charity Commission register, OSCR or CCNI.
05/ brand defence
Often, yes. Google’s trademark policy does not stop others “using trademarks as keywords”; it acts on ad text, and only on a complaint. Training providers, directories and rival bodies can all buy your name.
Own-name ads also fix a quieter problem: when your login page outranks your join page, a would-be member lands on a sign-in box. Our SEO work fixes the organic side.

06/ the landing page
The page after the click decides the cost per member. Each ad group should land on the step of the join flow that matches its promise, with the price on the page, not on a home page or a PDF of membership grades.
Auto-renewing memberships are about to be regulated. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 brings pre-contract information, reminder notices and easy cancellation. More paid traffic multiplies whatever a join flow gets wrong, so we check it first; if it needs rebuilding, that is website work, not more budget.

07/ measurement
Five steps take an account from counting clicks to bidding on paid members.
the legal floor
Consent banner and Google consent mode, set up for UK visitors.
the primary conversion
One primary conversion: a completed, paid join.
first-party data
Hashed email and phone from the join form, never plain text.
what happened next
Paid joins, lapses and renewals from your membership system.
the payoff
Target CPA set from your own lifetime value.
Consent comes first. Google’s EU user consent policy covers UK users, and the ICO says storage used for advertising needs consent. The analytics exception in the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, in force since 5 February 2026, does not cover advertising.
Then the join, and what happened next. Google’s enhanced-conversion documentation describes matching hashed first-party data to improve measurement of eligible website or offline conversions. Check consent, disclosure and customer-data policy restrictions before uploading membership records; sensitive-category conversions are excluded. Use your own membership records to review renewal by acquisition source where attribution is available.
Only then bid to value. Set Target CPA from the calculator above, not from a benchmark.
08/ costs and benchmarks
Two costs: the media, paid to the platforms, and the management, paid to us. Our plans start from £1,500 a month, scoped to the members at stake. If your numbers do not support paid media yet, we will say so on the first call.
The benchmarks cited here describe other markets and do not establish a paid-search norm for your membership model. Plan from your own lifetime value and joining data, and treat the published figures as scoped context.
Average Google Ads cost per click, US, all industries
A lead is not a member, a US average is not a UK professional body, and a fundraising lead is not a paying joiner. Your lifetime value, from the calculator, is the better planning number.
09/ how we work
Five stages, in order. Nothing is spent until the tracking can see a paid join.

Bids move to joins once conversions flow; search terms and ads are pruned every week.

10/ by sector
01 / Professional bodies
People search for the designation, the exam or the CPD before they search for you. LinkedIn job-title targeting reaches the grade you want.
Professional bodies →02 / Trade associations
The member is a firm. LinkedIn company-type and seniority targeting reaches the people who sign the subscription.
Trade associations →03 / Membership charities
The grant covers the searches it can win within its rules; a paid account covers the terms its bid cap cannot reach.
Membership charities →04 / Clubs and subscriptions
Location matters more than job title. Meta lookalikes can be built from your best members rather than broad interests.
Private members’ clubs →11/ conversion definitions
Our suggested measurement plan keeps applications, approvals and paid membership separate. The campaign should be judged against the outcome the organisation can actually verify.
A professional body may check qualifications before offering membership. A private club may review an application before collecting a joining payment. In either case, a submitted form is an earlier event than a paid join. Set out the sequence before configuring bidding or reporting, and name the event the campaign is intended to produce.
Record an application identifier that follows the application through review and payment. In the organisation’s own records, distinguish submitted, eligible, approved, paid and withdrawn applications. Do not add those stages together as five members. If payment is refunded or an application is rejected, keep the final status visible in the membership report.
Choose a reporting window that reflects the actual approval process. A campaign with recently submitted applications should not be compared with an older campaign whose applications have all been decided. Our suggested report shows the application cohort, completed decisions and paid joins, with unresolved applications alongside them.
Google Ads documentation distinguishes enhanced conversions for web from enhanced conversions for leads, which combines first-party website data with imported offline conversions. This is platform documentation, not a promise that every join can be attributed. Check the supported implementation against your approval and payment systems before selecting it.
Check policy eligibility before uploading member data. Google’s customer-data policy requires applicable disclosure and consent and restricts sensitive-category conversions, including trade union membership. Enhanced conversions do not make a member’s consent choice disappear or permit data the policy excludes.
A form event, with the application identifier and the intended membership category.
Approval, rejection or withdrawal stays attached to the same application.
The verified joining outcome is reported once, with later adjustments visible.
A fictional association could receive applications in September and approve some in October. Its September cohort report should show which have become paid members and which are still awaiting a decision. The sequence is illustrative; it supplies no benchmark conversion rate and does not change the cost model above.
