can they talk 3:1 in your terms?
01/ overview
Use the agency comparison framework to examine evidence, team, scope and handover without assuming an unsupported ranking.
A membership body and a professional-services firm have different buying tasks. If you are choosing an agency for a law, accountancy or advisory firm, use the professional services marketing agency buyer guide to frame that brief.
Membership marketing companies specialise in the unique challenges of growing and retaining members. Unlike generalist marketing firms, they understand recurring revenue models, renewal economics and the psychology of belonging.
A useful yardstick: a healthy membership operation returns at least three times what a member costs to acquire, the 3:1 lifetime value to acquisition cost ratio. A credible company should talk about your numbers in those terms.
We are one of the specialist companies ourselves. As a specialist membership marketing agency, we wrote this guide from inside the market, and we are upfront about that throughout.
What to look for in membership marketing companies →Both are published practitioner guidance, not research findings: GlueUp (3:1) and MembershipCorp (50–100%).
Written for professional bodies, trade associations, private members clubs
The best of them combine deep sector expertise with modern techniques like AI-powered prospect identification and predictive analytics.
Whether you’re a professional body, trade association, or private members club, choosing the right membership marketing company is crucial.
02/ evaluation guide
1. Sector Expertise. The best membership marketing companies have deep experience in your specific sector. They understand the nuances between professional bodies, trade associations, and private clubs. Look for firms that can demonstrate proven results with organisations similar to yours.
2. Integrated Approach. Leading membership marketing companies offer integrated services across acquisition, retention, and engagement. Avoid firms that focus solely on acquisition without understanding retention economics: it’s a recipe for a leaky bucket.
3. Modern Techniques. Top membership marketing firms combine traditional expertise with modern technology. Look for companies using AI for prospect identification, predictive analytics for churn prevention, and personalisation at scale.
4. Transparent Pricing. Reputable membership marketing companies are transparent about their pricing and what’s included. Be wary of firms that won’t discuss fees upfront or that promise unrealistic results for minimal investment.
5. Measurable Results. The best membership marketing firms focus on measurable outcomes: member growth, retention rates, lifetime value, and engagement metrics. They should provide regular reporting and be accountable for results.

07/ before you sign
Whichever company you choose, three things stay your responsibility: the member data it handles, the claims it makes in your name, and any connection to your board.
Data. A company that runs your email, CRM or campaigns is usually a processor of your members’ data. UK GDPR requires a contract setting out the processing’s subject matter, duration, nature and purpose, with the processor acting only on your documented instructions (UK GDPR, Article 28).
The ICO lists the minimum terms (ICO). If a company offers to buy or rent data for you, the ICO says “it is not enough to simply accept a third party’s assurances” that it is compliant (ICO).
Claims. Anything published for you is your marketing. The CAP Code requires marketers to hold documentary evidence for objective claims before they publish them (CAP Code, rule 3.7), and fake or concealed incentivised reviews are a banned practice under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (CMA208).
Conflicts. For a charity, paying a trustee — or a company connected to one — for services relies on a statutory power that has to be used correctly. Used wrongly, the Charity Commission warns, payments may be “unauthorised” and may have to be repaid (CC11).
