01/ Judge the proposed work
What should a health club marketing plan cover?
A useful proposal connects local discovery to an attended visit, joining and the first useful session. Ask each company to show who owns every handoff and what it will measure.
The Health & Fitness Association’s sales-process article reports practitioner advice on understanding a prospect’s motivation, creating a comfortable visit and handing the new member to fitness staff. It is dated operational guidance, rather than evidence of a current conversion benchmark.
Use this example plan to compare scope. Set targets from your own club’s baseline, and distinguish booked visits from attended visits and paid joins.

Explain facilities, access and who the club suits.
- 02Enquiry

02/ the real difference
Not All Health Club Marketing Companies Are the Same
Most health club marketing companies sell one thing: leads. But in fitness, filling the funnel is only half the job — a member who lapses in month four costs you far more than they ever paid in joining fees.
The companies worth hiring optimise for the full lifecycle: local acquisition, sign-up conversion, onboarding and the retention work that actually drives a club’s profitability.
That is our whole model. We are a retention-led health club marketing agency — part of what we do as a full-service membership marketing agency — one of the few gym and fitness marketing companies that measures success in member lifetime value, not cost per lead.
Leisure DB, 2026 · UK operator dataset. ukactive, 2025 · UK sector body, with 4GLOBAL, Sport England and Deloitte; its club definition is narrower, so the two counts differ.
→ Fit and specialism usually matter more than size.
The market is bigger than it has ever been, and that changes what growth means. Leisure DB’s 2026 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report puts UK gym membership above 12 million, with penetration up from 16.6% to 17.6%, and says growth is “increasingly driven by utilisation and value rather than expansion alone”.
ukactive’s 2025 market report, on a narrower club definition, counts 11.5 million members across 5,607 clubs and revenue above £5.7bn.

04/ questions to ask
How to Compare Health Club Marketing Companies
Put the same four questions to every company on your list, then check their answers against the yardsticks below.
Ask what their onboarding actually changes, not just whether they have one.
In a randomised trial of 356 new members at a Norwegian fitness centre, two phone calls and an email in the first eight weeks made members more likely to book a trainer, but did not change the number of visits or when members cancelled over four years (Riseth et al., 2021, peer-reviewed).
A credible company tests its early-member programme against what members do next.
Question 01
How do you measure success?
Look for lifetime value and retention, not just cost per lead.
Question 02
Do you handle retention?
A company that only does acquisition leaves churn unsolved.
Question 03
Do you know fitness churn?
Front-loaded churn needs first-90-days expertise, not generic ads.
Question 04
What’s the reporting?
You should see member economics, not just impressions and clicks.

05/ why retention wins
The first visits need a reliable handover.
Ask how the proposed campaign will connect with fitness instructor and staff handovers. A specialist membership marketing agency should define the join event and receiving owner; use the membership acquisition guide to assess the wider journey.
A drop in early attendance is a reason to check access, relevance and the member’s experience. It does not establish when or whether that member will cancel.
For comparison, US association survey respondents reported first-year renewal at a median of 75% (MGI 2024 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report), against 82% across all members (MGI 2026). Those association medians are not gym-specific targets or a guarantee about the timing of cancellation.
In a peer-reviewed UK study of 1,726 new members, attendance in the first quarter predicted the fourth (Rand et al., 2020); a UK vendor reports one in ten members gone within ninety days (Xplor Resamania, citing operator reports it does not link).

Health & Fitness Association, 2025 Fitness Industry Benchmarking Report · sector-body survey, 175 companies in 27 countries, US-weighted — not a UK figure.
Fitness has its own yardstick. The Health & Fitness Association’s 2025 benchmarking report — a sector-body survey of 175 companies running more than 17,000 facilities in 27 countries, weighted towards the US — found a member retention rate of 66.4% and net membership growth of 5.5% in 2024.

06/ the rules
Gym marketing inside the UK subscription rules
A gym membership is a subscription, and the rules around subscriptions are tightening. Any company that writes your join offers, renewal emails and review requests has to work inside them.
Parliament was told in April 2026 that there are an estimated 155 million active UK subscriptions, worth around £26 billion a year, with £1.6 billion a year spent on ones people do not want — and fitness is named among the services people rely on (HCWS1498).
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 requires clear pre-contract information, regular reminders and a straightforward way to cancel, with a 14-day cooling-off period when a trial rolls onto full price or a contract of 12 months or more auto-renews.
The government has said the rules will come into force in January 2027.
Check a company’s plan against the rules
01Join pages state price, term and renewal up front
02Renewal reminders are built into the member journey
03Cancelling is as easy as joining
04No tie beyond 12 months without a way out
05Reviews are never faked or secretly incentivised

Minimum terms have been tested before. In 2011 the High Court, in a case brought by the Office of Fair Trading, held that gym contract terms making members pay the rest of a minimum period in full if they cancelled were unfair (OFT, Ashbourne case).
The court also indicated that a tie of more than 12 months would be unfair unless the member could cancel on 30 days’ notice and pay a modest sum.
Reviews carry the same risk. Fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews are now a banned practice under the 2024 Act — “automatically unfair and illegal” — and the CMA’s guidance covers the businesses that commission them and the services that offer to procure them (CMA208).
Ask every company how it gathers reviews for you. The renewal sequence itself is on membership renewals.
07/ Check the handoffs
Follow the enquiry to the second visit
Ask a prospective partner to show the handoffs between its marketing and your club team.
A low enquiry cost tells you little if nobody follows up, a trial is never attended or the new member cannot book an induction. Build a shared report with enquiry source, contact outcome, trial booking, attendance, paid join and early use. Give each stage an owner so a broken handoff can be fixed.
Agree the counting rules before comparing companies. One person sending two forms is one prospect, not two leads. A booked tour is not an attended tour. Keep a refunded joining payment visible rather than counting it as a lasting acquisition. These are proposed reporting rules, not a published industry benchmark.
Ask how staff will see and update the same record when someone phones, walks in or joins online. Government Digital Service guidance treats a service as the whole journey across channels and internal systems. Applied to a health club, that means reporting the reception handoff as well as the advertising click.
Keep club capacity in the brief. An offer for a class that members cannot book needs an operational decision before another campaign. For delivery scope, see our health club marketing agency page.

08/ Compare fairly
Ask what the pilot can actually prove
A useful pilot has a clear question, an agreed audience and a decision at the end.
Set one question: can this campaign bring in suitable members at a cost the club can sustain? Choose the offer, catchment and membership type before launch. Write down the costs included in the assessment: media, partner work, creative, trial delivery and any incentive. Do not compare a media-only figure with another company’s complete cost.
Define when a joiner enters the report and when their early attendance will be reviewed. Keep later retention reporting on the same cohort. A campaign launched this month cannot already demonstrate a year of retention. Monthly club churn and association annual renewal belong to different measurement windows; gym retention rates covers the distinction.
Sport England’s evaluation framework distinguishes observed improvement from evidence that an intervention caused it. Ask whether a partner is reporting a before-and-after change or a comparison with a suitable untreated group. Seasonality, an offer change and a refurbishment can all complicate the story.
At review, decide whether to continue, change the offer or stop. Keep the learning and the reporting definitions whichever company you choose.
Practical commissioning advice based on published evaluation guidance, not a result claim.
